Alberto Ciroi Saves Best For Last As Ginga Atlanta Captures UPSL Championship

Goalkeeper Makes Two Saves In Shootout To Lead Club To First UPSL National Title

March 7, 2021 - Atlanta, GA - Ginga Atlanta played with 10 men for most of the weekend and allowed its goalkeeper the space to be great.

Alberto Ciroi did not allow a goal during open play on the weekend and made two saves in the shootout to lead Ginga Atlanta to a 0-0 (3-1) victory over Olympians FC in the 2020 UPSL Fall Season National Championship Game at Silverbacks Stadium.

"It's unbelievable, especially the way these two games went," Ginga Atlanta Head Coach Joao Garcia said.

The victory capped a record-breaking Fall Season for Ginga Atlanta, now Atletico Atlanta, which set new league marks for victories (21) and points (63).

Ginga Atlanta is the first Georgia-based club to be crowned UPSL champions.

"It's all I imagined and more," said forward Deon McCaulay, a UPSL MVP nominee this season.

"No feeling greater than being a National Champion. It's the ultimate prize for me - bigger than any individual award - and it feels amazing to know what hard work, determination and grit will bring," McCaulay said. "Our team is a real family and when you win in a family atmosphere where everyone respects and works hard for each other then it's very emotional."

Ginga Atlanta went down to 10 players for the second consecutive game after Onezimo Fransisco received a red card as the result of an altercation with Olympians FC forward Alex Tejera.

The teams battled back-and-forth but Olympians FC was unable to capitalize on its advantage and the game headed to a shootout after two scoreless overtime periods.

Jeffrey Otoo, Derrick Boateng and Welder Castro all converted kicks for Ginga Atlanta, and Ciroi made the match-deciding save diving to his left to stop a poorly-struck attempt from Tejera.
