September 23, 2020 – Los Angeles, CA – The United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) is pleased to announce Olympians FC's Gustavo Vargas has been selected its 2020 Spring Season Most Valuable Player presented by Score Sports.

Vargas, a 6-foot-1 center back, captained Olympians FC to its first UPSL Arizona Division Championship.

Olympians FC General Manager Marcelo Piana said, "We are so very happy to see Gustavo win this prestigious award. In the short period of time Gustavo has been with us he has earned the trust of the coaching staff and his teammates. He has shown incredible leadership and strives for perfection on and off the field. Having down up in Colombia, Gustavo knows what the expectations of this are all about. He's very deserving of this honor and we're very excited for him."

Vargas, a native of Bogata, Colombia, started in eight games of the 2020 Fall Season, scoring 2 goals and adding 2 assists in his first campaign for Olympians FC, the UPSL Arizona Division champions.

Olympians FC (7-0-1 overall) posted shutouts in its first five games and topped the UPSL Arizona Division with 15 points from six games.

Led by Vargas' defensive efforts, Olympians FC held opponents to a microscopic 0.13 goals against average.

"Our good defensive shape is what made it really difficult for other teams to score," Vargas said. "Our defense worked hard to cover the space in behind and we worked hard to not concede goals from set pieces."

Vargas was UPSL Player of the Week after completing 17 of 17 passes with nine clearances in a 3-0 victory in Week 4.

"Winning the UPSL MVP award means a lot to me and to the entire team. I achieved this goal because of the work ethic and collective effort of this team. I am lucky to be a part of such an incredible group of players and staff. They've made me a better player," Vargas said. "I am grateful to the UPSL, Olympians FC General Manager Marcel Piana and Head Coach Adrian Gaitan for giving me this opportunity to prove myself and take one step closer to my dream of professional football."

Vargas led final vote-getters with 41-percent of the vote (1,629 votes) in a 5-day Twitter poll that ran from Monday, Sept. 14 to Friday, Sept. 18, 2020.
