UPSL Announces Midwest Expansion with Mad City FC

Madison, WI-based Club Joins Midwest Conference for 2020 Spring Season
Published Apr 2, 2020

April 1, 2020 – Los Angeles, CA – The United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) is pleased to announce Mad City FC as its newest Division I member.

Based in Madison, WI, Mad City FC will begin UPSL play in the 2020 Spring Season as part of the Midwest Conference Central Division I. The club will host its home games at Madison Area Technical College (1701 Wright Street, Madison, WI 53704) in compliance with UPSL National Division I minimum standards.

United Premier Soccer League Midwest Conference Manager Carlos Torres said, "We're excited to welcome Mad City FC to the UPSL's Midwest Conference. Sam Johnson brings a lot of energy to his club. They have a strong core group of players with experience with experience at the Pro Development level and a number of younger players from high level club and colleges. Best of luck to Mad City FC as it prepares for the 2020 season."

Mad City FC was created in 2019 and will now compete exclusively in the UPSL.

Sam Johnson is Owner and General Manager of Mad City FC.

"Madison's soccer community has been changing rather rapidly in the last 2 years. That change opened up a gap where there's currently no means available to play at a men's amateur level where there previously was. Madison has a great pool of youth talent and programs. However, these programs are all typically only up to the U-19 level. Some of these players do end up going to play college ball while some do not, but we can pull from both pools as the UPSL spring season doesn't coincide with the collegiate season. It gives players, whom maybe college isn't a good fit, an opportunity to compete at a level that can get them noticed elsewhere. It also allows some of the older players in the city to compete outside of the various men's leagues offered. Since a lot of our players have history with the UPSL, it was an obvious choice to form a team to compete in a league that a lot of us are familiar with. My hope is not to be a stop gap for a season or two, but to provide a permanent solution and an extra resource for the Madison area soccer community as a whole," Johnson said.

The club will begin play when the UPSL resumes the 2020 Spring Season.
